What is National Peanut Butter Lover’s Month?

This November, we are excited to celebrate National Peanut Butter Lovers Month — the perfect time to satisfy all of your peanut butter cravings. We love this creamy and sometimes crunchy concoction so much we need an entire month dedicated to our affection for this delicious delicacy. We’ve collected some fun peanut butter facts and ideas that are sure to help you celebrate to the fullest.

History of National Peanut Butter Lover’s Month

The invention of peanut butter has long been falsely credited as belonging to George Washington Carver, who was an inventor and also a scientist determined to improve the welfare and nutrition of America’s farmers. This is partly because Mr. Carver was a huge proponent of peanuts as a source of protein and energy, and created a list of foods and recipes for farmers to use that were centered around peanuts.

But Carver did not actually invent peanut butter. By the time he was advocating for peanuts as a supportive, alternative crop (around 1916), peanut butter had already been popularized. In fact, in 1840 a New Yorker named Rose Davis started making peanut butter after her son saw Cuban women grinding the nuts and spreading them on bread. Additionally, evidence has surfaced that Aztecs may have even done something similar as early as the 15th century.

But, the first person credited with creating peanut butter was a French-Canadian man named Marcellus Gilmore Edson, who created it in 1884. Fourteen years later, Kellogg (the man of cereal fame) created the first streamlined process to mass produce the product and it was quickly considered a snack for elite society members as it was served as a protein source in wealthier hospitals. Since then, it’s grown to be more widely available, with PB&J becoming the official sandwich of, well, everyone who wants a quick, affordable, and protein-filled snack.

Fountain Pen Day 2021

Tip: Black Friday 2021 Robot Vacuums Coupons: Black Friday 2021 Robot Vacuums Coupons & Deals

There is something utterly elegant about hand-writing a document, about taking pen in hand and transferring the contents of our hearts and souls to paper.

When working on something as dreary as the budget for the month or filling out paperwork, a ball-point pen will do. When you are taken to record the most important moments of your life, or turning words into poetry, only the elegance of a Fountain Pen will do.

Fountain Pen Day reminds us of this and encourages us to pick up a fountain pen and put it our souls to paper.

History of Fountain Pen Day

The tools used for writing have gone through some massive changes throughout history. To begin with, it was chisels used to mark stone, a bit of papyrus reed to mark out the shapes of cuneiform, or bits of charcoal used to mark words on pieces of Birch Bark or bits of leaf.

Eventually, the ink was created, using various types of plant matter, animals, and eventually iron and extract of Oak galls. Ink required a new tool, and that tool was initially the dip quill pen, a bit of feather (usual goose) with a carefully cut nib to draw up the ink and transfer it to paper.

This was such an amazing innovation that it stayed with us for a goodly long while, but ultimately a new creation was needed that didn’t require constant dipping, and that didn’t require constant recutting of the nib.

So it was that the fountain pen came to exist in 1636, combining a wonderful reservoir of ink with a metal nib that didn’t require being recut constantly. The world of writing was changed forever, and it took 300 years for an innovation to come along that overshadowed it.

Overshadowed, but not eliminated, the Fountain Pen is still the writing utensil of choice for those who prefer a more traditional, elegant, and beautiful method of writing. It also has the benefit of producing a cleaner and more consistent line. Fountain Pen Day honors this writing utensil with the long, and ongoing, history.

How to celebrate Fountain Pen Day

The way to celebrate Fountain Pen Day is to go out and get yourself your very own fountain pen. Fountain pens can be had inexpensively, but don’t be surprised if you find yourself starting to ogle more expensive pens and the designs that combine beauty and function. It’s can be a fun new addiction for the aspiring pen fan.
