Inventor’s Month 2021

Inventor’s Month

I don't want people to look back at my matches and say, 'When you did that move, it was good, and I liked it because it was cool.' I want people to sort of remember a rush of images and the emotion that they felt when they saw it. That's when I think you have a real masterpiece in your hands.

Kenny Omega

The printing press. The automobile. The internet. Electricity. Penicillin. Glasses. Sliced bread! All of these things and thousands more are inventions made my ingenious inventors that may have lived thousands or hundreds of years ago, or may even still be alive today, that we benefit from every single day.

But do we ever take the time to think about just how much out-of-the-box thinking went into inventing these things, or how brave those inventors must have been to dare to dream up and create something nobody had ever heard of before? Probably not! And that’s why Inventor’s month was…invented!

The History of Inventor’s Month

National Inventors Month began was started in 1998 by the United Inventors Association of the USA (UIA-USA), the Academy of Applied Science, and Inventors’ Digest magazine. As Joanne Hayes-Rines, editor of Inventors’ Digest and a sponsor of National Inventors Month, put it: “We want to recognize those talented, brave individuals who dare to be blatantly creative, and therefore different, and whose accomplishments affect every facet of our lives.”

When we think of inventors, we usually think of people like Alexander Graham Bell or Henry Ford, and there’s nothing wrong with that—those people had an enormous impact on what life looks lie today, having invented the telephone and the automobile, respectively.

However, in an age of gadgets, gizmos and electronics, it’s easy to forget that there is still incredible progress being made in technological innovation. Need proof? Shunpei Yamazaki, without whom our LCD screens would not be able to work. Mark Zuckerberg, who created the most effective way to share pictures our cats ever. Stephen Hawking, whose insightful thories in cosmology have shaped the way humanity sees the universe.

Inventor’s Month is dedicated to recognizing the creativity of inventors everywhere, dead and alive, and of course encouraging everybody to get inventive.

How to Celebrate Inventor’s Month

There are a couple of great ways to celebrate Inventor’s Month. One is to think about what your own favorite inventions are, and how much you appreciate the person who came up with them. Maybe you have bad eyesight and could not live your life the way you do without your trusty contact lenses? Maybe you work long hours and your microwave is your superhero? Or maybe you’re a housewife/husband who would go crazy without that dishwasher? Whatever your personal favorite invention is, take some time to find out a little about who was behind it. If his or her invention makes your life so much better the least you could do is show the inventor some respect by finding out a bit about its history.

Another way to go about celebrating this month would be to look into patenting an invention of your own. It is estimated that the average person has one or two ideas every month that could make them rich if they just had the courage to make their dreams reality! So what are you waiting for? Inventor’s Month is time to get those creative juices flowing and see what you are capable of! Nobody is saying you have to be the next Alexander Fleming, so don’t worry too much about what will happen if your invention doesn’t turn out to be a game-changer.

What’s important is that you had the courage to go where no man has gone before, and that would definitely make all of the inventors before you proud!

Listicles National Immunization Awareness Month 2021

National Immunization Awareness Month

I track some long hours.

Jim Pattison

5 Amazing Facts About Vaccines

  1. Scientists got lucky

Though scientists didn’t yet understand what the smallpox virus was, it was widely believed that cowpox could be used to immunize against it. British scientist Edward Jenner’s research confirmed this and allowed him to develop the first smallpox vaccine in 1796 — an entire century before the virus was first officially discovered.

  2. One man developed over 40 vaccines

For Maurice Hilleman, that includes more than half of the 14 routinely recommended childhood immunizations in the U.S., including vaccines against measles, mumps, and meningococcal disease.

  3. Ancient Asian civilizations inoculated people 1,000 years ago

India and China are believed to be the first civilizations to inoculate their children against smallpox using a process called variolation. The process requires a small incision into a person's arm and then rubbing infected material (ground scabs or pus) into the wound.

  4. Meningitis has nearly been eliminated

Meningitis A is an infection that can cause severe brain damage and is often fatal. The introduction of the Meningitis A vaccine in Africa in 2010 has all but eliminated the disease.

  5. We are on the brink of a breakthrough

Currently there has been a major push for clinical development of vaccines, and the first vaccine to protect children against malaria will be piloted in three African countries in 2018.

When was the last time you checked to see if your immune system is up to date? This August, National Immunization Awareness Month raises awareness and encourages everyone to make sure they are current on the necessary vaccinations for potentially harmful diseases. Many diseases can be easily prevented by administering vaccines, and thus, protecting you from unseen viruses. Take the necessary precautions with a simple call to your doctor, and avoid potential harm while leading a healthy, happy life.

Fishing Month 2021

Fishing Month

You know, it's not the world that was my oppressor, because what the world does to you, if the world does it to you long enough and effectively enough, you begin to do to yourself.

James Baldwin

If you don’t know how to fish, then this is your big chance to do so because this month is Fishing Month! Fishing is a great activity to do for people of all ages, as it practically has been around since the beginning of humanity itself.

Throughout Fishing Month, people go out to their local parks and recreation centers and fish to their heart’s content, learning from coaches how to cast the lines and catch the biggest fish they can find.

History of Fishing Month

Fishing has been around as far as humanity, as fish are a staple part of people’s diets and have influenced cultures going back thousands of years.

As fishing turned from a necessity into a commodity, fly fishing had become a popular sport and leisure activity from the 19th century onward. Inventions such as the Nottingham reel, fiberglass rods, and synthetic bait has made fishing an easier and more accessible activity for many to do.

Fishing competitions can now be seen everywhere on TV, and whenever there’s a local park with a lake or river near it, it’s now easy enough for anyone to buy a fishing pole and go out fishing to see what’s the catch of the day.

Fishing, both a common necessity, a sport, and a recreational activity, bring people of all ages fun as well as tasty fish. Fishing Month, inspired by fishing enthusiasts alike, is a month when people come together to learn about fishing, practices their reeling-in skills, and make the most fun out of this activity.

Throughout the month, coaches help new fishers learn the techniques of fishing, such as preparing the line, hooking the bait, and seeing where the best fishing spots are in the area and how to spot them.

In some places, the fees for fishing are waivered, allowing people of all ages to try out fishing for themselves. Hundreds of localized events happen all over the world as people come together to celebrate fishing and teach each other the craft.

How to Celebrate Fishing Month

Want to learn how to fish? Take a fishing class and learn from a taught coach about the wonders of fishing. Don’t have the equipment to fish?

Head on over to a Dick’s Sporting Goods or your local sports shop and purchase your own set of fishing gear. You can also rent gear if you head on over to a national park that has fishing as an activity.

Tell your friends and family about the month ahead and plan for a fishing trip. Invite your friends out to fish with you and see what kind of local fish you can reel up.
